A traumatic event refers to an experience that inflicts severe emotional or physical damage, leaving individuals feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope. The specifics of traumatic events can vary from person to person, but they often involve feelings having experienced an event, or a series of events, in which you felt scared, powerless and unsure if you could keep yourself or someone you cared about safe. Trauma can contribute to feelings of isolation, fear, or helplessness resulting from actual or potential harm. Moreover, individuals may find that their usual coping mechanisms are insufficient to handle the situation, or the way the feel during or following a traumatic incident. Immediately following a trauma, intense emotions, nightmares, and difficulties with day-to-day functioning may arise. This is not necessarily indication of persistent problems or a mental illness. In can be the bodies very natural, and quite clever, way of processing what has happened.

Unfortunately, for some individuals, the distress lingers and may even worsen over time. Like most human experiences, the way we respond to a traumatic event will be influenced by the event itself, and by all the experiences we have had before. Further, our biology and the support we have around us will influence whether a normative trauma response persists and becomes a cause of persistent psychological distress.

While it is important to not refer to every distressing moment as traumatic (stress and distress is part of the health human experience when not chronic or high) it is equally important to be aware that you don’t have to experienced one very big traumatic event to be negatively impacted by trauma. The literature refers to ‘big T’ and ‘little t’ traumas. The first is, as you might expect, some of the big awful things that can occur. Little t trauma’s are varied and can include attachment trauma. The accumulation of a number of little t traumas can contribute to mental health difficulties over time.
